The best way to fully demonstrate Farseer’s features is to use it to create a model of a company. Considering that I’ve worked in a marketing department of a Telecom company, I decided to model a small telecom operator. The model is simplified, but it shows how some of the more advanced features of our software can be used in corporate financial planning.

Here are some facts you need to have in mind if you want to understand how telecom companies work:

  • Telecom operators are very dynamic environments
  • They have to be ready to respond to their competitors’ moves very swiftly
  • There are lots of different plans to manage (pre-paid, post-paid, mobile internet etc.)
  • Large groups of people are involved in corporate planning processes
  • Their management structure is often complex and they use different KPIs

Believe it or not, the main tool for reporting and planning process management in these companies is still MS Excel.

Why is that so?

For a while now, telecom operators have been collecting data about users and their habits in classical databases and billing systems. As new technologies and markets emerged, different KPI reporting tools also developed. However, the main problem of those tools was that telecom markets are very dynamic. Employees who know what they want to get from their reports don’t have the time to constantly adapt those tools to their current needs and ever-changing services they offer. In the end, it turned out that the all-time best, and the most flexible analytics and reporting tool is MS Excel (it’s cheap, and relatively easy to use), combined with well-engineered Data Warehouse and OLAP Cube.

All this leads to chaotic and unproductive corporate settings that inhibit productiveness and introduce lots of potential points for human error. Tens, sometimes even hundreds of spreadsheets are circulating through mailboxes every day. Management wants reports adapted to their KPIs, and employees responsible for number crunching tasks have to endlessly copy and paste between different versions of spreadsheet documents.

Due to the large amounts of documents and data, mistakes happen more than anyone likes to admit. Analytical value of numbers is being diminished by delays and mistakes, and Management makes their decisions on partially faulty KPI reports.
And we haven’t even got to the planning process and creating What-if scenarios…
All in all, the consolidation process for the data (plans vs. realizations) can last for weeks.

In companies like this, Farseer can help you by:

  • Simplifying complex data structures, and enabling the management to easily ‘’play’’ with data
  • You need to enter the data only once, and have the management analytics aggregated by Farseer’s consolidation engine
  • You need to enter the data only once, and have the management analytics aggregated by Farseer’s consolidation engine

The impacts of Farseer use in a company can be seen immediately:

  • Accelerated business planning, analytics and decision making for Management
  • Data is consolidated instantly, and it’s possible to quickly get the most relevant numbers for any business case
  • Management gets customised KPIs, adapted to their needs, without additionally encumbering employees in charge of data entry

Sounds promising, right? There are a lot of products out there, but only few of them that can deliver on their promises.

We modelled the Telecom template for you to see what can Farseer offer to your company. It’s important to note that this example model is significantly simplified (comparing to the model that would be used in an actual telecom company).
